Letters to the editor: 

A letter written for and sent to a newspaper or magazine to present person or organization's position, make a correction or respond to another story or letter. They are typically short in length, usually up to 300 words. 
 
An op-ed: 
An op-ed is an opinion piece published in newspapers, magazines or online publications. The term “op-ed” means “opposite the editorial.” In newspapers, it describes the common placement of an op-ed piece being on the page opposite an editorial.
